Mānuka honey is known for being earthier, richer, and more viscous than many other honeys. It comes from the nectar of the flower of Leptospermum scoparium — also known as Mānuka, which is only native to New Zealand. Mānuka, in fact, is a Maori word. “The plant itself is very rare. It’s difficult to harvest because the flower is only open for 12 days, and sometimes we have to use helicopters to collect this honey.” John Rawcliffe from the Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association(UMF) told Business Insider. Although mānuka bushes can also be found in Australia, New Zealand accounts for almost all the world’s production, with exports worth 300 million NZ dollars ($204m) and expected to rise to 1.2 billion NZ ($800m) by 2028.

What is Mānuka honey?
New Zealand mānuka honey is produced by bees collecting nectar from the mānuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium), can be found growing throughout New Zealand.
Mānuka honey is a premium product that’s growing steadily as a high-value export for New Zealand.

Making sure it’s authentic NZ Mānuka honey
In December 2017, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) finalised a robust and sophisticated scientific definition that can be used to authenticate whether or not a particular honey is New Zealand mānuka honey. Aims of the science definition for mānuka honey regulated by the MPI are to;
* that overseas regulators have confidence in the assurances we give them about New Zealand mānuka honey, and
* consumers in import countries are confident they’re getting genuine mānuka honey.

Tests to authenticate Mānuka honey
The mānuka honey definition is made up of a combination of 5 attributes (4 chemicals from nectar and 1 DNA marker from mānuka pollen).

AVAILABLE TO USE MGO / UMF GRADING SYSTEM WITH THE DEFINITION
MPI has agreed that unless markets require otherwise, grading systems can continue to be used on honey labels, provided that there is evidence to substantiate the grade or claim, and that all other labelling requirements are met.

EXPORT CERTIFICATE OF MANUKA HONEY FOR EXPORT HAS TO BE WITH DEFINITION TEST RESULTS
As new export requirement is on effect, manuka honey export to countries requiring office assurances has to includes validated laboratory test results
proving that each batch of honey in a consignment is monofloral or multifloral manuka with exact honey type statement on the export certificate.

At Natural Farm Group
We are fully support our customer to keep your export / import business is going with confidence on this change.

We ensure to present manuka definition test results certified by MPI-recognised laboratories, Analytica Loboratories and Hill Laboratories, along with manuka grading test results

Natural Farm Group Ltd. is excited to announce that they’ve just become a licensee of the official FernMark Licence Programme. It’s a programme designed to protect and promote Kiwi products to the world, which is why it’s a great move for the health products company. Equally, being a licensee now makes Natural Farm Group Ltd. an ambassador for
New Zealand, which is both a privilege and an exciting opportunity.

The FernMark Licence Programme is the Government’s official ‘country of origin’ accreditation programme. That means products presented by Natural Farm Group Ltd. that display the FernMark have met the New Zealand Government’s eligibility criteria, which includes being GST registered in NZ, having a substantial level of New Zealand ownership, governance and employees and have been exporting for over 12 months. This criteria also requires that licensed Natural Farm Group Ltd. products are made, grown or designed in New Zealand, which is why the Government is happy for them to represent New Zealand around the world.

The Programme employs a global monitoring service, Yellow Brand Protection. The service trawls over 800 online trading sites to check for illegitimate use of the FernMark. That protects the Programme by maintaining its credibility and integrity – and protects consumers by giving them the confidence that when they see the FernMark, it’s an authentic New Zealand product.

Ultimately, the FernMark Licence Programme delivers consumer trust. Carrying the FernMark means New Zealand companies are able to authenticate their products as being from New Zealand, while consumers can trust that they're buying authentic products. And in turn, the Programme entrusts us to represent New Zealand at its best. It's a win-win situation.

For more information about the FernMark Licence Programme, visit www.fernmark.nzstory.govt.nz
